Green Violin

Green Violin was developed at New York Theatre Workshop and Musical Theater Works in New York, commissioned for a production at the Prince Music Theater in Philadelphia (2003) with music by Frank London, directed by Rebecca Taichman, sets and costumes by Marina Dragici, lighting by Jane Cox. The production won four Barrymore Awards, including best direction and best new score for a musical, and received eleven nominations.  Green Violin was commissioned by a grant from the Fox Foundation and the National Foundation for Jewish Culture; my research in Moscow was funded by a TCG travel grant.  Green Violin is published in an anthology Nine Contemporary Jewish Plays University of Texas Press.  Green Violin was translated into Russian by a leading Russian playwright, Alexander Galin, and presented with American and Russian actors in St. Petersburg at the Theater on Mokhovaya (2005) directed by Rebecca Taichman.  It was also presented at the Jewish Music Festival in Amsterdam (2006) with a British cast, Dutch klezmer ensemble, Di Fidyl Kapel, and Russian violinist, Vladimir Ustinovsky; produced by Ralph Levie with the Joods Historisch Museum, and Raymond Wright, Ballantrae Productions in London, directed by Elise Thoron, music direction, Frank London. Green Violin was also performed at the Jewish Museum in New York (2008), in conjunction with an exhibition of Chagall's murals for the Soviet Yiddish Theater.
